James Deryl Tapp, age 90, passed away to his long awaited home on Thursday, August 16th in Clovis, New Mexico. He was born on September 19, 1927 in Lubbock to James Floyd and Velma Wassom Tapp. He married his high school sweetheart Thelma Louise Alford on June 1, 1945 in Lubbock.
Deryl was a devoted member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas. He was also a lifelong member of the Plainview Gideons Camp. Soon after becoming a dedicated member of the Gideons, Deryl was honored as President and Treasurer of the Texas Gideons. During his service with the Gideons, Deryl was enthusiastic to share the Lord with the prison inmates in both Tulia and Plainview. He also spread the word of Jesus through mission trips to Japan, Brazil, Russia, and Spain. In his latter days, Deryl had the opportunity to further his love of sharing the Lord by establishing a church at Wheatfields Senior Living Facility in Clovis, NM.
Deryl was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Velma, his wife; Thelma Alford Tapp, two of his brothers; Therell Travis Tapp & Doyle Wayne Tapp, and his son-in-law, Thomas Wayne McClaran. Deryl is survived by his three daughters: Sue McClaran of Farwell, Texas, Jan and husband Homer Gattis of Hesston, Kansas, Carol and husband Randy Kaufman of Plainview, Texas, and one brother, Bill Tapp of Bullard, Texas, and one sister, JoAnn Tapp Starkey of Duncanville, Texas. He was blessed to have 9 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren and they were the joy of his life.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Wheatfields Senior Living Facility.
What a great man & a great life of service to God. Deryl touched so many lives in such a positive way teaching & helping others. He live such a long & fruitful life. Our prayers are with his family during this time. Blessing to you all. Larry & Julie Cunningham
