Homer Mitchell

October 21, 1924 — December 10, 1944

Homer J. Mitchell, World War II veteran killed in action on December 10, 1944 in Pachten, Germany and missing for almost 80 years, is being brought home and laid to rest with his family in Portales.

Homer was born on October 21, 1924 in Texhoma, Oklahoma to Roy and Gussie Mitchell and was the next to the youngest of their children. He entered the United States Army a few months after he turned 18. He was a Private in the US Army Company F, 2nd Battalion 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division known as the Red T.O. The insignia T.O. stands for Texas and Oklahoma. He served valiantly and sacrificed his life for his country.

Homer is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Akard Mitchell, James Mitchell, Pearl (Mitchell) Miller and Fred Mitchell.

Survivors include nieces Patsy Acuff, Nancy McDowell and Gail Hankins; and nephews M.C. Davis and Cliff Davis.

Graveside memorial services with military honors will be held on April 26, 2024 at 1:00 PM in Portales Cemetery under the direction of Steed Todd Funeral Home.

The ultimate sacrifice this soldier made will never be forgotten.
