Lewis Carter

October 6, 1942 — August 2, 2020

Lewis Alvin Carter, known as Al, age 77, of Clovis, New Mexico, died August 2, 2020 at home from lung cancer.

He was born in Clovis, New Mexico and preceded in death by his parents, Flossie Gentry and Lewis A. Carter; as well as his brother, Jimmy Carter. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Carter; sibling, Bruce Carter; half-brothers, Eddie and Gary Taylor; sons, Herbert Ray (Blanca) Carter and Russell (Ginger) Carter; stepdaughters, Tammy White, Jeannie (Harvie) Avies, and Robin (Jim) Wolford; grandchildren, Jesse White, Christopher White, Daniel Spielman, Robert Spielman, and Leia Schippert; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Allie, Grayson, Lydia Spielman, and Julian Spielman; as well as his adopted sons, Ronnie (Dianne) Schippert and Raymond Lucero.

Al graduated from the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he earned awards for wrestling. He graduated with honors from the Lear Siegler Computer School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He attended both Eastern New Mexico University and the New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He worked as a computer programmer for the Maryland Business Enterprise for the blind.

Al was also a member of the Freemason Society. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed his church callings, including visiting home teaching. He enjoyed doing woodworking where he lost several of his fingers. Nothing stopped Al, even riding a bike. If he ended up in Mexico, that was fine with him. His humor was never failing. He always had a smile and he loved to travel. He had a rich, full life as a blind man (which he never identified as). He was wise and gave practical advice. Al volunteered at the Hope Center and helped deliver meals. There was not a thing he couldn’t do. If you were moving, you could call Al. He would help build fences and even sheds. In short, he embraced life, regardless of the struggle, making his handicap an asset. He showed us how to do life right. Everybody loved him and he will be greatly missed.

Services for Al will be held Monday, August 10th, at 11:00AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2800 Lore Street in Clovis, NM.

Pallbearers will include Bo Greene, Bill Coleman, Brad Heath, Jason Gonzales, Eddie Taylor, and Bruce Carter. Honorary bearers will include Don Pinnell, Arthur Jones, Raymond Lucero, Jack Bumgarner and Bill Brower.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the St. Jude’s Children Resources Center.
